Allez:NL 2026: the Jewish Museum of Belgium takes part in the city’s big Dutch practice day

On Thursday 26 November 2026, Brussels will come alive for Allez, a special day offering opportunities for Brussels residents who are learning Dutch to practise the language. Now in its fifth edition, the event is an opportunity to meet others, practise Dutch in an inspiring way and discover more about Brussels’ Dutch-speaking network.

The programme features more than 60 free activities across the city, organised by more than 50 Brussels-based organisations. Sing, read, play sports together, visit an exhibition, watch a film… and chat, chat, chat! CAPITAL vzw is the central meeting place throughout the day. Everyone aged 16 and over who would like to practise their Dutch is welcome — including beginners.

Our activity: a walk exploring Jewish life in the Marolles

The Marolles has always been a popular and multicultural neighbourhood, full of life and shaped by the rebellious spirit, playfulness and spontaneity of its residents. Over the centuries, different communities have found their place here and left their mark on the urban landscape and life of the neighbourhood.

Less well known is the short but intense history of the Jewish community in the Marolles. It was a period of major change, when progress, renewal and new ideas went hand in hand with one of the darkest chapters in our history.

What did the arrival of the Jewish community mean for the Marolles? How did it transform the neighbourhood, and what traces of its presence can still be seen today? Together, we will delve into this lesser-known chapter of history and explore what the Jewish community left behind in the heart of the Marolles.

Allez is a collaboration with Het Huis van het Nederlands Brussel and aims to make culture and history accessible to everyone. The walk is conducted in clear, accessible Dutch, allowing people who are learning the language to discover the history of the Marolles too.
